The other day, Justin the regional salon person came into the salon to see how things were going, and since Gloria the manager wasn't there, but Eloina and I were, and Eloina was busy with a client, I got taken out to dinner.
And Justin gave me a great deal of advice about how to deal with Gloria and her quirky little ways of running a salon that aren't bad per se but just contrary to how I feel they should be done, most of which I can never do if I should desire to maintain a healthy working relationship with the woman.
And he also told me gossip about the Norridge salon, which is the one that I wanted to work at so badly before I went around and check other salons out.
He told me that the people there are so petty and predatory and competitive that they all secretly complain to him on a regular basis about each other, mostly about how petty, predatory and competitive the other people working there are, and how rough it is to deal with that sort of thing.
To which I say ha!
However, the more amusing bit was that every single member of the staff from Norridge has called him to tell him that they want the manager removed because she is too demanding and bossy, but they don't threaten to do anything if their demands aren't met. This is the number one salon in the state, which pretty much has that title because the staff members are so driven to succeed by their manager. And instead of trying to talk to or reason with the manager in private, they all snipe about her to her superiors.
Justin says it is highly unlikely that she would ever be removed because a) the salon more than doubled its revenue when she took over, b) she is also in the top 5 of the entire company as an individual, and c) she is a very nice and accessible person, and there is not a single reason that any member of her staff shouldn't be able to approach her about his/her problems with the current administration of the salon.
Which makes me very glad I didn't work there, because I don't like snipy people. I got enough of that at Younkers to last me a lifetime.
Gloria calls me her "Cinderella" and feeds me because she appreciates how hard I work on and off the floor, and isn't afraid to show it.
Praise and quality foodstuffs are so much easier to deal with than backstabbing and pushiness.
What's in your head?
