I saw a TV show which featured removing tarnish from sterling silver by lining a glass 9 X 13 baking dish with aluminum foil and adding (dumb me, this is the part I can't remember) something which makes a great dipping solution to instantly remove tarnish without having to rub, polish or whatever.
Help....do you know what the "magic" solution might be? I'll be beholding to you forever if you can tell me the ingredient.
Thank you. S. A. Tengel (aka...can't remember squat!)
Dearest S. A. Tengel,
Okay, I see a lot, and I mean a lot, of beholding in your near future.
The magical solution is... baking soda and hot water.
Ah, electrochemistry at its finest.
I could cut and paste the why's and wherefor's here, but I'm lazy and it's late. So, see more about how and why this works here.

P.S. In my quest for knowledge, I also found this piece of advice:
"This is a poor man's Tarnex. Mix about 4 cups of water with 3/4 cup powdered water softener in a bucket. Place a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom of the bucket. Add your silver; it creates the same chemical reaction."
