Parents Unaware of Kid's Backpack Weight

Despite the impact it may have on their children's health, most parents are unaware of how much weight their kids are towing in their backpack.

Investigators looked at the backpacks of 188 grammar school students. The average youngster toted backpacks weighing approximately 14% of their body weight, in keeping with the 10% to 20% maximums recommended by many child health advocates.

However, many students in the study "schlepped" packs weighing considerable more. These heavy packs were linked with musculoskeletal problems. According to the report, "Most parents (96%) had never checked their child's backpack weight; 34% had never checked the backpack contents." Many packs contained items not necessary for school, which accounted for unneeded weight.

The study's authors suggest that parents examine their children's packs, and eliminate unnecessary baggage.

Poison Prevention Tips - AgingWell.state.ny.us

Accidental poisoning is a concern of every parent. However, it is not uncommon for adults to be unintentionally poisoned every year.

The following suggestions will help keep your household safe and help you avoid an accidental poisoning.

1. Keep potential poisons in their original container.

2. Do not store food and household and chemical products together. Keep them separated.

3. Read the directions or cautions labels carefully before using any household or chemical product.

4. Do not sniff containers to determine contents.

5. Discard old or outdated chemical or household products.

6. Do not mix household or chemical products together.

7. When using products indoors, open windows to use fans to provide ventilation.

8. When spraying, direct the nozzle away from your face or other people.

9. Wear protective clothing to help avoid skin contact when spraying pesticides or other chemicals.

10. If an accidental exposure to household or chemical items occurs, contact your doctor of local poison control center for instructions. Keep the name of the product handy, along with ingredients.

Poisons come in several different forms. Solid poisons include laundry soap, dishwasher detergent, granular pesticides and fertilizers or other powders. Plants can also serve as another source of accidental poisoning.

Liquid poisons include liquid laundry soap, lotions, polishes, lighter fluid and many others. Poisonous sprays can include insecticides,
spray paints or aerosol cleaning products.

Invisible poisons such as carbon monoxide gas or radon are common by-products from heaters or furnaces, automobiles or gas or old stoves.

Medications can also serve as another source of accidental poisoning, especially among older people.

You know, that's really super sweet of you to care about my welfare, and that of my non-existant children, but I really do not remember signing up for this bulletin.

And, mysteriously, every single time I try to get off the list, I get enrolled again, so that now 3 copies of every email from y'all goes directly into the circular file.

I mean, honestly, would I subscribe to something like this with the email address of an advice column?

I don't think so.

And if one of you, my dear readers, felt compelled to hook me up with these spammers, please try to contain yourself in the future. All of the damned emails about thermal relaxing that end up in the mailbox every day, most of which completely duplicate something that I have already answered or are incredibly easy to research for yourself online, are bad enough.
