Matty asked me once if I was the one to told him to read the Weetzie Bat books, because they were really good. I said I hadn't, and that was the end of that.
The other day when I was at the lieberry, I was not impressed with what I was finding in the grown-up sections, so I wandered over to the jAdult fiction, because the books over there seemed more interesting.
Previously, I had wanted to read Elsewhere, by Will Shetterly, because Neil Gaiman had recommended that this man and his wife were absolute masters of urban fantasy, and he recommended this book specifically. Not only did I find this particular book, but I found its sequel, and discovered that the majority of the books in jAdult were either of the Sweet Valley High genre, or were 100% full on escapist fantasy.
The other day when I was at the lieberry, and was not impressed with what I found in the grown-up sections, I discovered some interesting-looking books by someone named Francesca Lia Block. I flipped through one of them, The Rose and the Beast, and it looked absolutely wonderful, and completely what I needed to read. I imagined that all of the other books she wrote were as wonderful-looking too, so I checked out all of her titles that were on the shelf, leaving a sizable gap between books on either side.
I came home with The Rose and the Beast, Echo, Violet & Claire, and Dangerous Angels.
After finishing the first one, I decided to look through the pile of Francesca's books, to make a decision as to which one I should read next. Lost and found girl, Echo. Two girls that complete each other and want to share their vision with everyone else, Violet and Claire. The complete collection of the Weetzie Bat books, Dangerous Angels.
I swear on a gigantic stack of sacred texts that I didn't know she was the person who wrote the books that Matty wanted me to read. I was just idling through the A's and B's, and these books, under Block, were the first ones that looked really interesting.
I know which one I am going to read next, with a cup of peppermint tea, and a plate of gingersnaps.
