This morning, I witnessed the familiar sight of a V of geese or ducks flying overhead, and I felt mixed emotions.
On one hand, their flight is a beautiful sign that Fall is upon us: leaves will soon change color, and everyone's green lawns will be transformed into crunchy red and brown and golden hillocks. The air becomes crisp and cleaner feeling. Cocoa and soup become dietary staples. Corduroy trousers and woolen sweaters make there way to the front of the closet.
But, while I realize that these birds are only fulfilling a biological drive, an instinct, a need, a niggling urge telling them they must leave the area in search of balmier climes, I can't help but be perplexed as to why they were headed north.
