Yesterday, schools were cancelled all over the place because of some fog. FOG. Oh, God, not fog!
I can see a flight being cancelled. Fog is bad for the whole flying of planes thing, but school? Criminy. All the little kids got to stay home and drive their parents batty because of some 'inclement weather' that lasted a couple of hours and ended up a beautiful, sunny fall day.
Back when the mall I work at was the only mall in the area, every time there was a snow day, the day being deemed too treacherous for children to go to school on the bus or by car or by foot, the mall would be boomingly full of teenagers. Apparently the inability to safely travel 3 miles to school somehow was negated by the desire to drive 20 miles from one's small town to the teeming metropolis of Iowa City and shop at The Buckle or Express.
When I was in school, I think we got one snow day, and that was more of an early dismissal that culminated with me walking home in a sleet storm. Of course, when I was a kid you could spank your children without Child Protective Services swooping in and declaring you a child abusing, unfit parent. Today I'd probably have been declared an abused child and be living in a foster home because of that sleet storm.
I'll never understand Iowa.
