I would like to know where, in New York, is a salon where the Japanese Hair straightening is less than $400....can you recommend any places?

-- Marie R.

Ah yes, another one, much like last week's... and this one is even a two-parter:

Marie,

As far as the actual Japanese process, you're probably not going to have any luck finding it anywhere for under $400. The salons that offer this service have not only gone through extensive, exclusive and specialized training, but they also have a corner on this market, and are going to charge through the nose for it.

You might have better luck looking for a Rusk salon that offers "Rusk Thermal Str8" as a service. I have used another (non-heat based) straightening system by Rusk on my hair, which is now freakishly straight and sleek -- it is so straight that it is flat and devoid of the puffiness I am very used to having, so I am pretty confident that the heat-based straightening system would be even more effective.   The only place I found immediately near NYC that says it offers Thermal Str8 is in Connecticut:

Hairstylists and Nails Plus
16 Mountain Ave.
Bloomfield, CT 06002
(860) 243-9797

However, from the www.rusk1.com homepage, the following salons offer Rusk products, and it is fairly likely that one of them will offer the service. The recommended price from the manufacturer is for the salon to charge the client $100/hour for the procedure, so one of them might fit the bill. You will have to contact them and ask for yourself, but this list is definitely a good place to start:

Sorry I couldn't be 100% more specific, but I am midwest-based, and know little about who does what on the coasts. I can however point people in directions that might be helpful.   Good luck, and let me know how it turns out!

Thanks for the info..I definitely want the Japanese straightening....where would you recommend that is near the $400 range?

-- Marie R.

Marie,

Like I said, I don't know what salons are where. I did some googling, came up with no one that charged less than $500, and offered an alternative that is essentially the same thing and most likely a lot cheaper.

If I were you, I'd check out the Rusk salons to see if any of them in your area offer Thermal Str8, and if so, how much.

If you still want the specifically "Japanese straightening," you better get out a phone book and start calling around, because I personally can't find anyone that fits your bill. I'd imagine that you'd have better luck in this situation working on your own, as you are already in that area, and I am not.

Besides, imagine how large my long distance bill would be if I made those calls for you!

Again, good luck.
