I think I've hit upon a plan. Throughout my artistic education I've dabbled. I've drawn, painted, taken and developed photographs, made intaglio prints, and bound books.
I really enjoyed life drawing -- the rendering of the nude human form with a piece of charcoal and a sheet of paper was very satisfying. I liked going to Macbride Hall and sketching the stuffed birds and mammals was interesting. But after I realized that I'd achieved all that I was artistically capable of in the medium, I got tired of it.
However, I really like binding books. There are so many different techniques involved in manipulating the paper that I think I could bind books until I die, and still not make all the kinds of books there are to be made.
Tonight, one of my classmates asked me if I was in the Center for the Book, and I told him that I wasn't. I told him I was a lowly art major, and he asked if I was pursuing a degree program in bookbinding. I didn't have an answer because I'd never thought about it before, but I think that perhaps I have found the emphasis for my studio degree in the Center for the Book.
Now, I just need to meet with my advisor and find out what exactly I need to do to make this idea a reality.
