On Saturday, I went downtown with a threefold purpose; I was to buy several things related loosely to the gym, and then I was to go work out at said gym. Task number one was to acquire a discman fannypack. I've seen them on people jogging; a nice little disc player-sized belt pack that has room for keys and some cash as well. I went to Active Endeavors, where I discovered they have every sort of container for things you might need while engaged in physical activity, with the noted exception of the item I so desperately wanted. I then went to Enzler's, which is a luggage store and purveyor of all things containery. Once again, no beltpack cd player holder thingy. They didn't even know where I could acquire such an item.
Outside Enzler's, I ran into some friends - Nick and Emily - who told me that there were craft booths down the block - the Iowa Arts Festival was going on, and I probably wouldn't have even noticed without being told. I am entirely capable of a vast lack of attention-paying sometimes. Incidentally, Nick is the gentleman licking my face in the halloween photo on the start page of this site. Anyways, I was informed by Emily that they had some neoprene beltpouch walkman holders at Wilson's Sporting Goods, and I thanked her most kindly, then went to Wilson's and bought one. It is black, made from neoprene, and stretchy enough to accomodate my disc player.
Task two was to purchase more "self esteem" brand tank tops to wear to the gym. I already have an orange one, so I got a red shirt and a yellow shirt too. They are cute. All three have navy trim and football jersey-style 00 numbers on the front. What that exactly has to do with self esteem is lost on me. They are also comfortable, cover enough ass that I don't feel all flashy at the gym, and cost under $10 a piece.
Instead of taking a direct path to the gym from the mall, I decided to cut through the art vendors and take in some culture. Lots of pottery, weird art objects, and jewelry galore. Some woman had these mobiles for sale that greatly reminded me of the Yul Ululu [or however it's spelled] one that Auntie Mame had in her living room during her weird danish phase; this being from the movie Auntie Mame, starring the delicious Rosalind Russell. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see the movie. SEE IT. Anyways, I found myself at this little stained glass booth, and ended up buying a suncatcher with a tiny victorian style faerie woman in it. As I left that booth, I walked past a display of the most amazing, brightly colored pottery. Rich, vibrant tropical hues of color bathed this pottery like a sunset, but noting the time, and noting a chartreuse and yellow soup tureen, I made my way towards the gym. Imagine my surprise when I realized that I had just stopped at the atm and was on my way back to the pottery booth with enough cash in hand to purchase the soup tureen, which I did. It matches my small collection of chartreuse fiesta ware perfectly.
I made it to the gym all right. I worked out, discovered the neoprene jobby is kinda sweat-inducing, but it is nicer than passing a sweaty cd player back and forth between two sweaty hands for the duration of a 2 mile run, and then having to reposition it constantly while you are working out on 20 different nautilus machines.
All in all, a decent day downtown.
