One of my clients came in today, for the first time in almost 6 months.
I barely recognized him.
Instead of the vibrant 40-something I'm used to seeing, I found myself staring at a wizened, yellow-fleshed old man that could barely walk.
His liver couldn't keep up with him after 20 years of extremely hard drinking, and he's dying because of it.
And because of the history of alcohol abuse, he's been denied access to a new liver, despite having been sober for a very long time.
Despite learning his lesson, he doesn't get another chance.
I suppose that someone out there that didn't fuck up might deserve a donor liver more, but it is awfully hard to look a man in the eyes, knowing that he's got 3 months to live, and rationalize it out from there.
